G-SHOCK inspired by the art of Japanese katana sword-forging, part of the flagship MR-G watch line that pays homage to craftsmanship.
Dedicated to traditional Japanese craftsmanship passed down through the centuries, this watch celebrates the pride and aesthetics of samurai warriors by incorporating the Shougeki-Maru: San, the katana commissioned by Casio for the MR-G line, into its design. The Japanese word for bright, San, in the sword's name, reflects the brilliance of the Japanese sword's blade and its shell-studded scabbard.
The bezel, crafted from recrystallized hybrid titanium, evokes the distinctive edge pattern forged by sword master Kamiyama Teruhira. The model is crafted from recrystallized layers of pure titanium and Ti64 that are cut, polished and treated with a deep hardening process to capture the model's unique characteristics.
Subtle differences in materials and processing conditions, as well as the inscription of 燦, the Japanese character for San, hand-engraved on the caseback by the master himself, ensure that each timepiece has a completely unique appearance, no two are alike.
After recrystallization and deep-layer hardening processes, the gray-blue AIP® ¹ is applied to the pure titanium middle case to express the blue of the Juryoku-Maru: Sword of San.
The watch strap features the blue shell lacquer aogai-nuri design by artist Nomura Mamoru, which adorns the Juryoku-Maru: San Scabbard, achieved using a processing technology developed specifically for this timepiece. Aogai-nuri refers to the mother-of-pearl inlay often used in the scabbards of Japanese swords.
The DAT55G² titanium alloy strap is finished with a structural coloring technique that uses ultra-precise micro-level processing to create iridescent colors inspired by aogai-nuri blue shell lacquer. Three times harder than pure titanium, the special DAT55G² alloy protects against scratches and wear, so the beautiful mirror-like surface and structural color will last for years to come.
More than just a tribute to tradition, this watch also offers superior modern functionality. Equipped with Bluetooth® for smartphone connectivity, the watch adjusts to radio wave time signals for precise timekeeping, and is packed with practical functions featuring Casio-original technology.
This very special MR-G, worthy of its 40th anniversary, celebrates both traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modern technology, all in a truly unique samurai-inspired watch.
Kamiyama Teruhira
A young swordsman of exceptional talent, Kamiyama leads the world of katana in modern Japan. Kamiyama's pursuit of the strength and beauty of the Japanese sword mirrors Casio's vision for G-SHOCK, which is why Casio commissioned the katana master to forge an original G-SHOCK sword, the Juryoku-Maru: San.
Nomura Mamoru
The third-generation head of SAGARADEN NOMURA in Kyoto. Nomura joined the family business at the age of 20. Having studied urushi lacquer techniques, he personally carries out every step of the process, from painting to ornamentation (mother-of-pearl inlay and maki-e metal powder). In 2018, Nomura received the Japan Traditional Crafters Chairman's Award for his lacquer natsume (matcha bowl).
